The Goose Drank Wine

Don't recognise This?

Shirley Ellis The Clapping song is much more popular than the original by Light Crust doughboys.  This song has been sampled covered and quoted... and quite rightly so if you don't recognise it then where have you been? It has been pushed and tugged at by many genres of music even Radiohead quotes 'We all went to heaven in a little row boat' in their pyramid song and I could never imagine Thom Yorke listening enjoying and jumping around to such an upbeat track! So who else...

I heard of this band a long time ago but never really took much notice of them thinking it was another mellow  sleepy girl band. However someone starred them on my Spotify so when I heard 'peace and love' from there new album I immediately wanted to find out who it was. Cat Power's new album Sun which came out on the 4th September is still very soulful like the other albums they have previously released but more upbeat and I love that they have sampled Little Rubber dolly on the 3,6,9 track.

I love love love Tom Waits he is exactly my kind of weirdo if you aren't familiar with him you may recognise him from being in The book of Eli or The  Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus? He pops up in lots of films and I would say Mule Variations is a good album to start with because some songs can be VERY theatrical and put you off if your new to his style. He takes the clapping song and like everything else hes touched he makes it little bit cool and a lot creepy

Who doesn't love a bit of Missy Elliot I have no idea who Izza Kizza is mind you but I enjoy this song and (let me)'work it' by her.

And then theres Cher Lloyd... Killing this song. But it shows just how many different people have loved this song so much they wanted to use it another Shirly Ellis song to check out is 'The name game' if you havent already heard it - I know all the words.

Deap Vally

This has to be my new favourite band at the moment if your a fan of The Kills or Dead Weather and cant wait for new songs from them, then this will ease the pain a little. Nowhere near as cool as Alisson Mossheart is (Obviously is anyone?!) but sounds so similar you could mistake it for her new album. Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards aka Deap Vally will be releasing there debue album early next year and are currently on tour in the UK supporting The Vaccines.

Hubble is a space telescope 600km above the Earth named after Edwin Powell Hubble one of the great pioneers of  modern astronomy. It was launched in 1990 by ESA/NASA with the objective to capture very high resolution observations to open new windows onto planets stars and galaxies. Here are some of the amazing images -

Star forming

Pillars of creation

Galaxy cluster composed of thousands of individual galaxies.
Pillar of gas and dust

I think Hubble might be my favourite photographer... want more? heres more images and heres the telescope

stars are shredding the surrounding material that is the last vestige of the giant cloud from which the stars were born.

Paloma Faith

The quirky singer has a amazing style and pulls off looks that shouldn't even be considered but her best accessory has to be her hair. Red isn't her natural colour but it certainly looks the part and she has recently begun wearing it with a Cruella Deville like streak at the front which makes the colour blossom even more.

Defacing the Tate

On Sunday 7th October Vladimir Umanets a visitor to the Tate Modern calmly walked up to Black on Maroon,1958 one of  Mark Rothkos Seagram murals and 'tagged' the bottom right corner with black paint. He then vanished and the Tate closed immediately once it was spotted, he was arrested on Monday. Vladimir claims it is part of his Yellowism movement and thinks he has added value to the painting, I think he is right and that the publicity stunt he has pulled has been successful. I don't agree with it I think it is spiteful to damage an original painting that so many people enjoyed. But the painting will be restored Tate have the best experts and eventually in the future someone will want this painting particularly because of the scribble and England will be watching a futuristic Time Team-esk program with magical gizmo's uncovering it. Will Vladimir be renowned for his artwork in the future - I don't think so.

Black on Maroon before the incident at the Tate.

What do you think about it?

The Rain Room

A rather seasonal post today about rAndom international's social experiment the rain room. It almost seems like the opposite of a shower, the audience are invited to walk through the 100 square meter space in the rain where like a dream the clouds part and you feel like a superior being not getting a single drop on your body as you move around freely.

This trio Florian Ortkrass, Stuart Wood and Hannes Koch who met at London Royal college of art have experimented with a lot of work that rely's on the participation of the audience to react with it like Temporary printing machine, 2011 which prints a picture of whatever objects in front of the piece and displays it until slowly fading to never be returned.

RAndom international have also been responsible for an exhibition called Audience, 2009 a installation using sixty four mirrors that turn and follow the member of the audience that they find the most interesting until the mirrors become disenchanted and chose somebody else to stare at. Ahhhhh a fashionistas dream...

The rain room is in the curve gallery at The Barbican centre in London until March 2013.
